Reading Strategies
Being able to sit down and read a book sounds simple; however, there are many things that have to be taken into consideration for that to happen and for a child to become a good reader. I am giving reading instruction in four areas: comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary. Following are some of the strategies we will be using in class. This is only the beginning!
Inferencing
Evidence from text + What you know (schema) = Inference
Watch the video For the Birds to see what you can infer

Try one more...Watch One Man Band to see what you can infer
Show what you know about inferring by trying your luck at these riddles! Use your schema and the clues. Click here.
Comprehension
Cause and Effect
Watch the following video so that you can understand more about cause and effect. Cause and effect is a strategy you can use in fiction and non-fiction as well.
Check For Understanding
Children are taught to stop after each paragraph or page and ask:
Who?
What is happening?
If he can do this, comprehension is indeed taking place.

Back Up and Reread
If a child cannot tell who and what is happening, then she should back up and reread the paragraph or page. When doing so, she should slow down and read with more focus and intent.

Accuracy
Cross Checking
When stumbling on a word and trying to figure it out, a child should ask:
Does it look right?
Does it sound right?
Does it make sense?
